Environmental Context

Located within the township of Yarram, 220 km southeast of Melbourne in the Wellington Shire, Yarram Primary School (YPS), No. 693 has educated the local children from Yarram and District since 1861.  The school is the centrepiece of the community and is proud of what it offers in a small rural town.  The school is currently performing in the top 10% of primary schools in the state.

A P-6 primary school, our current enrolment is 196 students from 129 families. 52% of our students are in receipt of the Educational Maintenance allowance.  40% of students travel to school by bus.  Our current Year 6 class contains 50% of students who have come to our school since the initial Prep intake.  In the last four years 117 extra students have enrolled outside the traditional Prep intake- a major transience factor which the school manages very well.

Central to the school is a cream brick veneer building.  There has been a strong culture of parents working to consistently improve the facilities offered by the school. Additional facilities include; a canteen, computer laboratory, withdrawal rooms, an art facility and a Bristol building utilized as a multi purpose facility for assemblies, Out of School Hours Care, Active After School Communities, physical education programs, Perceptual Motor Program, drama, music and professional in-services.  We also have a BBQ area, three separate play areas including a shade cloth covered play equipment, vegetable garden, large oval and covered sandpit.

Yarram Primary School offers curriculum programs in all Victorian Essential Learning Standards domains; English, Mathematics, Humanities, the Arts, Science, Information and Communication Technology, Thinking Processes, Design Creativity and Technology, Communication,  Health and Physical Education, Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning and Civics and Citizenship.  We have a strong tradition of emphasis on the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills and provide all students with access to a range of current technological equipment.

Our staff is predominantly of Expert Teacher classification and we will continue to work towards an even balance of gender and experience.  All teachers plan within an Area Team and engage in a subject area (Domain) Committee. Staff have moved ahead significantly over the past three years as a team.  During 2006 Yarram Primary School achieved Performance and Development Culture accreditation and is committed to continually developing staff skills and capabilities and supporting the development of pre-service teachers.  Performance Plans are linked to student outcomes and individual needs and in the next four years will be used to ensure teaching and learning is challenging and vibrant and well-positioned to capitalise on building modernisation and refurbishment.  The staff aims to move the schools results from "very good" to "outstanding".

We aim to operate with as small class sizes as possible to optimise maximum learning outcomes for all students. Students enjoy the benefits of specialist Music, Art/Craft and additional Literacy/ Numeracy support programs. We also provide programs which are responsive to individual learning needs and include individually tailored remedial programs. Students with special needs are well supported by a dedicated, innovative teaching support team. Junior students are well supported in the school through the highly successful Buddies program. Lunchtime activities vary from term to term and include football, netball, art/craft activities, library and social games. We also take pride in our musical activities including Band, which plays each Monday morning and both Junior, and Senior Choir. Students access a range of quality cultural activities annually thanks to the ongoing work of the Yarram Cultural Committee. Our innovative Kamshlaba cultural immersion program is one of the highlights of our year’s activities. Additional community support programs enhance our service and include After School Hours Care, Vacation Care, and Active After School Communities.

The Building Better Futures initiative will allow the school and its staff to tailor teaching and learning practices around the concept of the multiple modalities of learning. This futures orientated approach is a fresh perspective around the learning street concept. It is our intention to be an exemplary model of this innovative teaching practice to ensure our school is ready to capitalise on future buildings and ground developments. The implications of this thinking will impact dramatically on the manner in which teachers teach, how students undertake their learning experiences, the forms and essential ingredients of assessing “for, as and of “learning.

The school community actively supports the school through School Council with sub- committees in the areas of Finance, Buildings and Grounds, Education and Parents Club. The Parents Club has a major fundraising focus to support the broader resourcing needs of our programs as well as a parent support role for the school.

Additional documents essential to achieving our strategic direction are our School Policies including our Student Code of Conduct, our Annual Implementation Plan and our annual Program Evaluations and Budgets. These are available on request and are reviewed as part of our Review Cycle.
